Kentucky Women’s Golf Concludes Season at NCAA East Lansing Regional

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team’s season came to an end Wednesday, finishing in eighth place on a 20-over-par 884 at the NCAA East Lansing Regional at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan.

 

The top five teams, including No. 1 Southern California, No. 8 Oklahoma State, host No. 5 Michigan State, No. 2 Northwestern and No. 4 Pepperdine, will advance to the NCAA Women’s Golf Tournament at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, from May 17-22.

All-American and All-Southeastern Conference golfer, Laney Frye, finished atop the Kentucky lineup, tied for 20th place on a 3-over-par 219. She rallied a 1-over-par 73 in the final 18, the final round of her college career. It included a pair of birdies on Nos. 5 and 17, plus an eagle on the par-5 No. 13 after a two-footer putt.

Marissa Wenzler and Marta López Echevarría tied for 34th place, posting a pair of 7-over-par 223s at the NCAA East Lansing Regional. Wenzler, who also played the last tournament of her college career, earned a 5-over-par 77 in the final round, while López Echevarría, who played in her first NCAA Regional, earned a 7-over-par 79 on Wednesday.

Cathryn Brown, a freshman from Eddyville, Kentucky, also playing in her first NCAA Regional, picked up where she left off in the second round, collecting birdies on a trio of holes on the front nine. She made the turn 2-under before suffering a couple of blemishes on the back nine. The rookie finished tied for 41st place after a 3-over-par 75 in the final round and 9-over-par 225 tournament total.

María Villanueva Aperribay, a graduate student who also played in Blue and White for the last time, recorded an 8-over on Wednesday, sinking a pair of birdies on Nos. 11 and 13. She landed in a share of 53rd place on a 12-over-par 228 at the NCAA East Lansing Regional.

The Wildcats wrapped up the season with a 290.2 stroke average, the third best single-season stroke average in program history, and four finishes inside the top five in 2023-24.
