Kentucky Hosts Arkansas on Friday Night
Nov. 11, 2010
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Kentucky volleyball team will begin a two-match homestand this weekend with a match against Arkansas on Friday. First serve is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start.
Kentucky (14-12, 8-8) has four regular season matches remaining in the 2010 campaign and the Blue and White are just one victory shy of charting 15 or more victories for the 24th time in program history. Should UK reach its 15th victory this season it would mark just the sixth time in school allure that the Wildcats have totaled 15 or more wins in six straight seasons, a feat not accomplished since the stretch of seasons from 1988-1993.
Sophomore Stephanie Klefot, junior Gretchen Giesler and sophomore Christine Hartmann achieved a career-high in some fashion during a tough loss to Alabama in UK's last outing. Klefot set a new career best with 28 digs topping her previous high of 22 she had set twice this season. Giesler tossed down a career-best 16 kills to improve over her previous high of 13 set against the Tide a season earlier. Hartmann dished out 54 assists to better her previous high of 50 dimes.
Arkansas enters the weekend with a 13-13 overall record and a 7-8 clip in SEC action. The Razorbacks are led by sophomore Jasmine Norton who averages a team-leading 3.97 kills per set and 2.17 digs per frame. Arkansas charts 12.59 kills per stanza on .221 hitting while turning back 2.07 opponent attacks. UK leads the all-time series with the Razorbacks by a 14-13 margin after picking up a 3-1 victory earlier this season in Fayetteville, Ark.
Junior Becky Pavan struck for a career-high 19 kills on a near-perfect .792 hitting percentage to help the Kentucky volleyball team to an impressive 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 25-17) win at Arkansas in early October.
Pavan was unstoppable in leading the way for the Wildcats who snapped a three-match losing streak with the win at Arkansas, the team's seventh straight victory in the series. Hartmann had a then career-best 50 assists in leading UK to a season-high .379 attacking clip.
Senior Blaire Hiler chipped in with 12 kills on .375 hitting and Giesler had 10 kills on .400 hitting. Giesler led the way at the net with five blocks as UK charted nine for the match.
Freshman Whitney Billings chipped in with seven hammers to aid the UK cause. Senior Lauren Rapp posted eight kills and five digs. Klefot picked up 22 scoops, while freshman Jessi Greenberg added six in the UK victory.
