Volleyball Hosts Kentucky Classic This Weekend

  • The Kentucky volleyball team returns to action this weekend, Sept. 8-9, as it hosts the annual Kentucky Classic in Memorial Coliseum. The Wildcats welcome Georgia Tech, Toledo and Villanova to town for a six-match tournament.

    Georgia Tech will face Villanova at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, to open the tournament. The Yellow Jackets will take on Toledo at 5 p.m., followed by Kentucky and Villanova at 7 p.m.

    On Saturday, play begins with UK and Toledo facing off at 10 a.m. and continues with a 4 p.m. showdown between Kentucky and Georgia Tech. The final match will pit Villanova against Toledo in a 6:30 p.m. start at Memorial Coliseum.

    This marks the second meeting between UK and Villanova with the Cats holding a 1-0 lead in the all-time series. The only previous meeting was a 3-0 Kentucky win on Sept. 4, 1999, at the Virginia Tech Hokie Classic.

    Villanova enters the weekend with a 1-5 record. The Wildcats’ lone win came in a 3-2 victory over Miami (FL) on Sept. 2 at the Michigan State Invitational.

    Kentucky and Toledo will meet for the second time in their history this weekend. UK won the first meeting by a score of 3-2 on Sept. 10, 2000, at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus.

    Toledo brings a 2-6 record to Lexington this weekend. The Rockets have dropped three straight, including a 3-0 loss to IPFW on Tuesday night. Kate Bean leads the Rockets with 4.36 kills per game, while Lora Sarich has a team-high 5.0 digs per game.

    Georgia Tech holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with UK. The two last met on Aug. 31, 1996, in Lexington with GT taking that match by a final of 3-1.

    Georgia Tech is currently 3-1 on the year and has won three straight since dropping its season opener to Mississippi State. The Yellow Jackets defeated another SEC foe with a 3-2 win over Georgia earlier this season.

    The Wildcats are 4-1 on the year after defeating Morehead State in their last outing on Tuesday night. The Cats are a perfect 2-0 at home this season after defeating Western Kentucky in their season opener.

    The Kentucky offense is led by junior Nicole Britenriker who leads the team with 4.11 kills and 0.89 blocks per game. Sophomore Queen Nzenwa is tied for first with 0.89 blocks and is second with 3.37 kills per contest. Senior Jenni Casper continues to add to her school record for digs and is leading the team with 5.47 per game this season. Setter and reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Sarah Rumely is second n the team with 0.53 blocks per game and leads the team with 15 services aces.

    “It will be a great weekend of volleyball in Memorial Coliseum,” said UK head coach Craig Skinner. “We’re looking forward to some great competition and continuing our development as we get ready for Southeastern Conference play next weekend.”
