Undefeated Volleyball to Face No. 11 Louisville
After sweeping through its competition at the Big Orange Bash in Clemson, S.C., last weekend, the Kentucky volleyball team hits the road Wednesday to face in-state rival and 11th-ranked Louisville. Opening serve is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cardinal Arena.
The Wildcats (3-0) did not drop a single game in its opening weekend and were led by senior middle blocker Amy Kaplan, who tallied 25 kills on .360 hitting for UK. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player for her efforts. Joining Kaplan on the all-tournament team were fellow senior Leigh Marcum and freshman Queen Nzenwa.
Freshman outside hitter Ashlee Fisher registered an impressive 3.67 kpg over the weekend in her collegiate debut. Marcum is the Wildcats’ assists leader with a squad-best 12.22 dishes per game, while junior Louisville native Jenni Casper leads the defensive effort with a team-high 30 digs on the year. Casper (Mercy Academy) and freshman Alisa Pierce (Pleasure Ridge Park) both are making their homecomings with Wednesday’s match.
Louisville (3-0) breezed through the Courtyard by Marriott Classic last weekend, led by the tournament’s most valuable player Lena Ustymenko, who registered 49 kills during the three-match span. The Cardinals are currently on a 19-match win streak when playing at Cardinal Arena that includes a perfect 16-0 home record last season. Each of those 19 wins have been three-game sweeps.
The Cats lead the all-time series with the Cardinals 23-22, but Louisville has won the last seven matches between the two teams, including a 3-0 victory in Memorial Coliseum last season. The Wildcats’ last win in the series came on Sept. 21, 1999, a 3-2 victory in Memorial Coliseum.
