LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Kentucky volleyball team fell into a quick 11-0 hole against the LSU Tigers and never really got on track in a 3-1 LSU win on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum. UK had won nine straight matches against the Tigers dating back to 1992.

In game one, LSU (9-9, 2-3 SEC) out-hit the Cats .520 to .069 to spur the Tigers to a crushing 15-2 victory. Kelly Thompson led the way for LSU with a perfect six kills on six attacks in the game, pacing her match-high 28-kill performance.

The Cats improved their play in game two, but still dropped the game, 15-12. Kentucky (9-8, 2-4 SEC) finally got its act together in game three when the Cats rode 10 consecutive Katie Eiserman kills without an error to a 15-11 victory. In the match, Eiserman totaled a team-high 20 kills, scoring her twelfth double-double of the season with 13 digs. Megan Weiskircher posted her fifth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 16 digs.

UK carried the momentum from its game three victory into the early stages of game four as the team forged an early 4-4 tie. The Tigers then won eight of the next nine points to put the Cats’ backs up against the wall. The collapse that led to a 15-6 game-four win for LSU put an exclamation point on a difficult weekend for the UK netters.

“This was just a rough weekend for us,” said UK coach Jona Braden. “Our players fought hard in both matches, but the results are disappointing for separate reasons. On Friday (against Arkansas) we got out to a lead, but could not hold it. Today we were trailing from the beginning and never seemed to get things going. Next weekend is a new ballgame though and our team will have a whole week of practice to get ready for it.”

Next weekend’s action takes the Wildcats on the road for their bi-annual tour of the state of Mississippi, playing at Ole Miss on Friday, Oct. 15, and Mississippi State on Sunday, Oct. 17.
