LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Kentucky volleyball team completed a weekend sweep of the two Alabama-based SEC schools with a 3-0 win against the Auburn Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum. The Wildcats (9-6, 2-2 SEC) beat Alabama on Friday in a grueling and emotional five-game match.
Executing a tremendously proficient attack, the Cats posted a .310 hitting percentage, their first time over the .300-level since hitting .493 against Villanova on Sept. 4. Auburn (11-5, 2-2 SEC) was held to a paltry .080 mark.
UK was led by junior Megan Weiskircher who energized the Cats with several crushing kills and some key blocks throughout the match. Weiskircher totaled a match-high 12 kills, hitting at a career-best .611 clip. Jennie Reed led the squad with a .625 hitting percentage as she scored five kills on eight attempts with no hitting errors.
The Wildcats played stellar defense against Auburn as Weiskircher, Aleisha Craven and Katie Eiserman made some spectacular digs on some the Tigers’ hardest hit balls. Eiserman added to her team-high of eight double-doubles as she recorded her ninth with 11 kills and 12 digs.
The match marked the return of UK junior Stephenie Taylor who saw her first game action since injuring her back on Sept. 4 against Virginia Tech. She recorded a kill and a dig in limited action.
The next match for the Wildcats is set for Friday, Oct. 8 when Arkansas travels to Lexington for a 7 p.m. match. Against the Lady ‘Backs, UK will be looking to establish its first three-match SEC winning streak since the team began the 1996 conference season by beating Arkansas, LSU and Georgia. The Cats also play LSU at home next weekend, Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.
