Trefethen and Roels advance to Qualifying Round at Riviera/ITA All-American
Oct. 7, 2002
Los Angeles - UK senior Amy Trefethen beat Washington's Erin Boisclair 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to Tuesday's qualifying round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament at UCLA.
Trefethen will join teammates Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels, as all three attempt to advance to the main draw of the ITA All-American tournament. The main draw will consist of 32 of the nation's top collegiate tennis players. Their opponents are yet to be determined. The main draw will be played at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., beginning Thursday, Oct. 10.
Witten received an automatic bid to the qualifying round based on her No. 39 national ranking. Trefethen and Roels had to compete in the pre-qualifying rounds, which consisted of 64 players. Senior Jill Buckley also competed in the pre-qualifier but was beaten in the second round by Nikki Ptak of Pennsylvania, 6-1, 6-2.
Roels was defeated in the third round of the pre-qualifier by Duke's Jill Smith, but was given a bid into the qualifying round as an alternate after another player was unable to continue. Had she been defeated in the second round, Roels would not have been selected as an alternate.
The four women will also compete in the doubles-qualifying round on Tuesday. Trefethen will pair with Buckley and Roels with Witten.
Should they win in the qualifying round, the women will compete in the main draw beginning Thursday, Oct. 10.
