LEXINGTON, Ky. - The UK women's tennis team begins their fall schedule this weekend at the Southeastern Conference Fall Coaches Tournament in Auburn, Ala., at the Yarborough Tennis Center.
The Cats will be represented well in the three-day singles and doubles event. The tournament will feature each of the 12-SEC member schools. Kentucky will send eight players down to the tournament, including senior Megan Broderick, the Cats' top singles player.
Joining Broderick in Auburn, Ala., will be fellow senior Nicole Scates and a young contingent of Cats looking to make their marks in the always tough SEC. Sophomores Elle Coldiron and Jessica Stiles will compete for Kentucky along with freshmen Meredith Morrow, Caitlin McGraw, Misha Testerman and Marni Venter.
UK head coach Carlos Drada is looking forward to having his team compete in such a high level tournament as the SEC Fall Coaches Tournament.
"We've been working really hard and if we give our best effort out there results will come, regardless," Drada said. "This is a great opportunity for us to assess what level we are at. There will be top competition there and it will make us better prepared for the season."
The Cats return four players from the 2009-10 season, and are looking forward to putting their hard work in practice onto the court.
"The mindset is a really positive one," Drada said. "We're practicing with those Kentucky standards of working hard and playing at a high class."
Joining Kentucky this year is assistant coach Kevin Calhoun. Calhoun joins the Cats after serving as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Georgetown College for the past 10 years.
The Cats will play again in two weeks in the Roberta Allison Fall Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The fall tennis schedule is only for individual records, and team results will not be calculated. The SEC Fall Coaches Tournament will have the dozen schools rotating in singles and doubles brackets.
