Wildcats Roll the Tide
The University of Kentucky womens tennis team notched a big Southeastern Conference victory on Saturday, March, 3, when it cruised by the Alabama Crimson Tide 6-1 to up its record to 6-4 (2-3 SEC).
The Wildcats were impressive early when they grabbed two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. The UK squad of Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten, the nations 21st-ranked duo, came out hot, rolling to a 8-3 victory over Alabamas Emmanuele Berard and Dominique Glinzler, ranked 46th in the country.
In singles action, UK again got the best of the Tide by winning five of six matches. Mayorga roared to a big victory in a tough match against Berard, winning the contest 6-4, 7-6. Witten also picked up a win when she quickly bested Jennifer Ketchum 6-4, 6-0. Sophomore Leigh Bradwell and junior Lauren Rookledge both extended their winning streaks to four with straight set wins over Welyi Chang and Glinzler respectively.
Sophomore Amy Trefethen defeated Becca Baum in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to round out UKs 6-1 victory.
"I am very proud of this team," Coach Mark Guilbeau said. "Even before this match was won or lost, this team showed its toughness and a strong attitude by bringing intelligence, effort and its best skills to the match. We learn a great deal from our ability to bounce back after a fantastic match, but tough loss at Mississippi State."
"This team must continue to use the skills and play the style that is most effective", Assistant Coach Kathy Herring added. "Today was a very good step in that direction."
The Cats will look to make it six straight victories at home on Sunday, March 4, when they take on the Indiana Hoosiers at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. Action begins at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free.
