Pienaar Enters Consolation Finals

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky's Minnette Pienaar earned a spot in the consolation finals of the Kentucky Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Graaf-Reinet, South Africa, native fired through two matches which placed her in Sunday's final against Louisville's Ashley Irvin. The Kentucky Invitational will conclude tomorrow at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center with doubles starting at 9 a.m. and singles taking the courts no earlier than 10 a.m. ET.
Pienaar defeated Andra Voinea of East Tennessee State in the earlier of the two matches, allowing only two opponent games, for a 6-1, 6-1 result. The Wildcat faced more resistance in the second match against Eastern Kentucky's Anouk Foure, but overcame the competition, 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Caroline Lilley played in the quarterfinals of singles against Sona Novakova of the Division II Champions, Armstrong Atlantic State. Lilley fell to Novakova, 6-1, 6-2. The Portland, Ore., native played in a consolation match with Erin Vierra of Virginia but suffered a heart-breaking three-set defeat, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.
Lilley and Pienaar with team up for a consolation doubles match tomorrow against AASU's Alida Mueller-Wehlau and Martina Beckmann at 9 a.m. ET.
The competition at the Invitational is tough; of the 12 participating schools, six finished the 2009 regular season in the top 40 of the Campbell's/ITA College Tennis rankings. Michigan leads the pack at No. 18 while Vanderbilt and Kentucky are close behind at No. 22 and 25, respectively. Virginia files in at No. 28, Illinois at No. 33 and Ohio State at No. 37. Two top Division II institutions will also be present, Armstrong Atlantic State University and Abilene Christian University. AASU recently claimed the DII title in 2009 and ACU is ranked top-six in the division.
Rounding out the list of participants are Penn State from the Big Ten conference, UK's in-state rival Louisville of the Big East, East Tennessee State from the Atlantic Sun and Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference.
