UK Concludes Gator Classic with Eight Shut-outs

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team concluded the Gator Classic at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla., Sunday afternoon. Kentucky finished with a combined 23-13 record and a total of eight shut-outs.

Three Wildcats entered the final round of competition during the tournament. The No. 16 duo of Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston faced Notre Dame’s Kristy Frilling and Kelcy Tefft during the doubles final. UK could not hold on and fell to the Irish, 8-2. The Blue and White tandem finished the weekend 2-1 after a first round bye.

Wildcat freshman Jennifer Stone made an outstanding debut at the Gator Classic. Stone made the final cut in the Flight B singles bracket. The Greensboro, N.C., native set foot at the service line against Andrea Yacaman of Central Florida. Yacaman took the first set at 6-3 but Stone put up a fight during the second set. The pair remained close and settled the match at 7-6(3) in the Knight’s favor. In her first collegiate tournament, Stone completed the weekend with a 3-1 record.

In the final back draw matches, junior Christine Johnston, ranked No. 118, defeated Elvira Serrot of UCF, 6-2, 6-2. Johnston wrapped up the tournament with a 3-1 tally. The Ohio native led the Cats last season with a 20-4 singles record. Sophomore Megan Broderick also ended Sunday on a winning note. Broderick defeated Jessica Zok of South Florida, 6-4, 6-3, for a 2-1 record.

Kentucky players Sarah Woestmann and Carolina Escamilla both competed in the Flight A back draw during Sunday’s matches. Woestmann saw action against Janette Bejlkovic of USF but suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat. Escamilla also was unable to find success after a toe-to-toe match with Jenny Frisell of Central Florida. Frisell won in a quick third set 10-6 after tying sets, 6-3, 3-6. Escamilla broke even on the tournament for a 2-2 record.


 

 

UK sophomore Lauren Meier and freshman Caroline Lilley finished the Flight B singles back draw with wins. Meier rounded out the weekend at 3-1 and defeated Natalia Guevara of USF. The Wildcat allowed only one opponent point, defeating the South Florida Bull, 6-1, 6-0. Lilley came out on top against Christy Core of Central Florida, 6-2, 6-3, and finished the tournament 2-1.

During the doubles back draw, Kentucky swept the competition. Stone and Notre Dame’s Kristen Rafael earned a 2-1 record after defeating Katie Orletsky and Alexis Rodriguez of UCF, 8-2. Broderick and Woestmann saw another Central Florida team of Core and Frisell. The UK duo out served the competition, 8-5, ended the weekend 1-1 after having a first round bye. Lilley and Meier teamed up for a shut-out of South Florida’s Allyn Mueller and Jessica Zok. Kentucky defeated the Bull’s 8-0 and capped off the tournament with a 2-1 record.
