Kentucky Women's Tennis Notches Three Wins on Tuesday
Feb. 26, 2013 LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s tennis swept a series of three matches on Tuesday at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex, defeating Eastern Kentucky 4-0, Northern Kentucky 4-0 and Abilene Christian 5-2. Kentucky’s three wins bumped its record up to 9-2 on the year as the Wildcats move into Southeastern Conference play. The Wildcats saw tremendous play out of their top-three spots, with all three spots failing to drop a set in Tuesday’s three matches. Freshman Nadia Ravita improved her record to 10-1 in the No. 1 singles slots with three additional wins. Senior Jessica Stiles went 2-0 in the No. 2 singles spot and junior Caitlin McGraw went 3-0 on the day in singles. Kentucky – Eastern Kentucky McGraw and Ravita used court one to clinch the doubles point for Kentucky, knocking off Melissa Gerritsen and Kristina Labeja 8-2. Up 1-0 after doubles, the top three singles spots took care of business for Kentucky. Ravita clinched Kentucky’s first singles point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Faouzi in the No. 1 singles slot. Finishing shortly after Ravita, McGraw gave Kentucky a 3-0 lead with a straight sets (6-2, 6-1) win over Saioa Oscoz on court three. Stiles wrapped up the match for Kentucky on court two, winning 6-4, 6-3 to give the Wildcats their fourth point. The match was called at decision; forcing courts 4-6 to be abandoned. Kentucky – Northern Kentucky Match The Wildcats jumped out early and ran away with the match, dropping just three games in their four singles victories. Fox was the first Wildcat to finish, failing to surrender a game and winning 6-0, 6-0 on court four. Ravita won her second match of the day in the No. 1 slot, beating Claire Spradlin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Lewis added on in the No. 3 singles position, taking her match against Holly Robinson 6-0, 6-0. McGraw was the only Wildcat to drop a game but won the match-clinching point in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to give Kentucky its second 4-0 win of the day. With the match called decision in singles play, doubles play was not necessary. Kentucky – Abilene Christian Stiles and Fox surrendered a 7-4 lead on court three, eventually falling 9-7 to allow ACU to clinch the doubles point. Court two was abandoned when ACU clinched the doubles point. With the Wildcats slumping in their third match of the day, senior Jessica Stiles stepped up and gave Kentucky a spark, defeating Micah Hermsdorf 6-0, 6-0 on court two. Ravita claimed a lead for Kentucky, taking court one 6-2, 6-2, her third singles win of the day, with all three coming in three sets. After winning needed a tiebreaker to win the first, McGraw took the second set on court three 6-1 to give Kentucky a 3-1 lead in the match. Fox clinched the match for the Wildcats, winning the No. 5 singles point in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). After the match had been decided, Laura Mongin defeated Lewis 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles position. Witten recorded a win in straight sets, defeating Hannah Kelly 6-4, 6-4. Kentucky will open SEC play on the road this weekend, traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday at 1 p.m. before heading to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Wildcats moved up in the rankings this week, coming in at No. 53 in the ITA’s latest rankings. Ravita bounced up to No. 51 in the individual rankings.
