Cats Get Back On Track With Big Win
Feb. 12, 2000
LEXINGTON, Kty. - The UK women's tennis team got back on the winning track when it upped its record to 3-1 on Saturday. The Cats bounced back from a recent loss to second-ranked Florida to knock off the 27th-ranked North Carolina Tarheels, 5-4.
With the score tied at three after six singles matches, UK took control by winning two of the three doubles matches en route to the victory.
Wildcat junior Brooke Skeen defeated her second nationally ranked opponent in as many days with a win over 101st-ranked Kendrick Bunn. Freshmen Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley also picked up impressive singles victories. Both of UK's ranked doubles teams, 23rd-ranked Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten and 30th-ranked Brooke Skeen and Leigh Bradwell, notched wins which proved to be the difference in the match.
"North Carolina is a very good team. This is a reflection of the rest of our season. We have a lot of matches with teams that are ranked really close to us and it will come down to one or two match-ups," Coach Mark Guilbeau said. "Today we played with competitive fire, maturity, composure and concentration. We are really executing well. It was great to play at home in front of such a large turnout, both the team and I appreciate the lift that the fans give us when we play at home."
The Cats will be back in action on Feb. 20, when they travel north to take on 74th-ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor.
