Cats Fall In Consolation Match

Madison, Wis. - The 34th-ranked University of Kentucky women's tennis team lost to William & Mary, 4-3, on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the USTA/ITA Naitonal Indoor Team Championships at Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Kentucky (4-4) won the doubles point early to take a 1-0 lead. UK's Sarah Witten and Nathalie Roels, who are ranked 10th in the nation, defeated William & Mary's Candice Fuchs and Megan Muth by a score of 8-4. 17th-ranked Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley secured the point for Kentucky when they defeated Amy Wei and Kari Olsen, 8-6.
In singles, Kentucky took a 2-0 lead after Shannon Stafford defeated Lena Sherbakov in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(4). However, The Tribe fought back to even the score at 2-2. Roels, ranked 48th in singles, played an epic match with 52nd-ranked Muth, who took the first set 7-5. In the second set Roels and Muth went back and forth forcing a tie-breaker. Roels played a tough set and fell in the tie-break, 7-6. In the third and deciding set, Roels held on as long as she could before falling 6-4. With the Cats up 2-1, Shannon Stough faced off against Olsen, who won the first set, 6-3. Stough stormed back in the second set and won 6-2. In the third set, the two played to the wire before Olsen outlasted Stough, 7-5.
The Cats fell behind 3-2 after Buckley fell to Nina Kamp, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. With their backs against the wall, the Cats kept clawing to get back into the match. 37th-ranked Witten stormed to a one-set-to-none lead over 40th-ranked Fuchs, 6-4. Witten continued to battle in the second set before falling 7-5. In the third set, Fuchs was too much for Witten as she claimed the set 6-2 clinching the team victory for William & Mary. Trefethen defeated Wei, 6-2, 7-5, to set the final tally.
Kentucky is back home on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when they face Indiana at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
