Softball Shoots Down Western Kentucky, 11-3

Freshman Lyndsey Angus helps lead Cats to win.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 20, 2000) -- Led by freshman Lyndsey Angus, the University of Kentucky softball team defeated Western Kentucky, 11-3, in five innings due to the mercy rule on Thursday evening at the UK Softball Complex. Angus went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored three runs. She was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.

Angus hit her first career home run, a solo shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning to give the Cats a 1-0 lead over the visiting Lady Toppers.

UK (26-22) added another run in the second on freshman Jamie Dardis' RBI-single to left field as Tiffany Kruse scored from third. After lead off double to start the third inning, Angus scored from third on Angie Dal Pozzo's RBI-single to left field.

The game was stopped in the bottom of the fourth due to a tornado watch and thunderstorms in the area. After a one hour and fifty minute rain delay, the game resumed at 8:50 p.m.

When the two teams resumed, the Cats tacked on three more runs on four hits. Beth Fogle reached base on a throwing error by WKU third baseman Shanon Searle, allowing Nikki Jones and Jen Howland. Angus' RBI-single to center field scored Fogle as UK built a 6-0 lead.

WKU (24-19-1) got on the board in the top of the fifth as the Lady Toppers recorded four doubles in inning off UK starter Howland. WKU's three runs trimmed the lead to 6-3.

However, UK struck back in the bottom of the fifth with five runs, giving the Cats an 11-3 victory over WKU in the first meeting between the two teams. Howland improved to 7-5 with the victory, while WKU starter Amber Garlington dropped to 15-11.

All nine UK batters recorded a hit as the Cats tallied 14 hits as team. Jones, Kruse, and Howland recorded two hits apiece, while Fogle scored a run and Kwiatkowski drove in two runs.

"Offensively, we really hit the ball well tonight," UK coach Beth Kirchner said. "It certainly helps us build some momentum going into our weekend series with Florida."

The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.

UK returns to action on Friday, April 21, when the Cats play host to the Florida Gators in a pivotal four-game series at the UK Softball Complex. The doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. UK head basketball coach Tubby Smith will throw out the first pitch before the doubleheader.
