April 7, 2003
The University of Kentucky softball team (9-29, 1-17) will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on the Lady Vols in a mid-week SEC series, April 8-9. UT (36-13, 9-6) has won 12 of their last 13, including two shut-out wins over #14 South Carolina.
Most recently, the Lady Vols swept a series with Arkansas, winning the games 1-0, 9-2 and 2-0. Tennessee is led offensively by freshman Kristi Durant who is sporting a .441 batting average. In the pitcher's circle, freshman Stacey Jennings and senior Stephanie Humphrey anchor the pitching attack. Jennings comes in with an 18-8 record and a 1.61 ERA while Humphrey is 13-2 on the season with a 2.05 ERA. Humphrey was named SEC Player of the Week for the week of 3/31-4/6 after going 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA. She also pitched the SEC's first no-hitter, a 2-0 decision against South Carolina.
Tennessee is led by co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly. They are in their second season at the helm of the Lady Vols program where they have amassed a 71-38-1 record.
The Lady Vols hold a 12-6 series lead over the Wildcats. Last season's series was canceled because of the weather in Lexington. In 2001, the teams split a pair of games in Knoxville.
Following the Tennessee series, the Wildcats come back to Lexington for a night before flying to Baton Rouge for a series with the 11th-ranked LSU Tigers.
