Cats Come Up Short Against No. 13 LSU
The University of Kentucky softball team fell to 14-16 on the year and 2-10 in the Southeastern Conference today, Mar. 26, after falling 6-1 to No. 13 LSU. The Tigers swept the series and move to 31-5 overall with a 7-2 mark in conference play.
In her second start of the season, UK pitcher Samantha Allen threw well through the fist two innings but ran into trouble in the top of the third. The Tigers scored four runs off four hits, including a three-run homer by Leslie Klein to put LSU on top 4-0.
The Wildcats scored a run in the home half of the inning when Ashley Dimkich walked with one out and went to second on a single by Brooke Marnitz. Pinch runner Ali Ray would score from second on a two-base throwing error by the LSU shortstop to make it a 4-1 Tiger lead.
The Cats loaded the bases with three singles in the fifth, but stranded all three runners to end the scoring threat. UK did not have a hit the rest of the way and stranded seven baserunners in the loss.
The Tigers added to their lead in the top of the seventh with four singles off reliever Jessica Trueblood to win by the final score of 6-1.
Marnitz, Megan Miller, Gina Florence, Megan Glenn and Lori Melchi each singled for the Catsí five hits on the day.
Emily Turner got the win for LSU and improved to 12-2 on the year. She struck out three and walked three in the complete game.
Allen (1-1) took the loss for Kentucky after giving up four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. She walked one and recorded one strikeout.
The Wildcats return to action when they host a mid-week SEC series with the No. 2-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols. The three game series will begin with a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 29, at 3 p.m.
