The Kentucky softball team dropped a pair of Southeastern Conference games to the No. 9 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide today, Mar. 19, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Wildcats fell 10-2 in five innings in game one and lost 6-2 in the second game of the Saturday double dip.
UK falls to 12-21 on the year and 1-7 in the SEC, while the Crimson Tide improves to 30-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
In the nightcap, Alabama checked into the scoring column first when a run scored on a two-out fielder’s choice. The Cats quickly tied it with a run as Alli Eckman plated a run with her bases-loaded walk in the top of the second. Starting pitcher Meghan Cooper scored on the free pass, having reaching base with a single through the left side earlier in the inning.
Cooper drew a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth. She was lifted for pinch-runner Kristen Cochran who stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. She would cross the plate on a sacrifice fly to right by Katie Campbell to give UK a 2-1 lead.
Cooper had retired the side in order three straight innings before the Tide plated five runs on five hits in the fifth to go on top 6-2. Samantha Allen relieved Cooper in the fifth and got two fly balls to the outfield to end the inning after walking the first batter she faced.
Cooper falls to 3-10 on the year with the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Wildcats managed just two hits on the day, a pair of singles by Cooper and Brooke Marnitz. Marnitz has hit safely in three straight games and leads the team with a .333 average.
Alabama got on the board first in the opening game of the series as four runs scored on back-to-back doubles off starter Samantha Allen in the bottom of the second. The Tide added another four-spot in the third inning behind five hits and one Wildcat error.
UK broke up the shutout in the top of the fourth as Campbell homered for the second straight game and the third time this season. Her two-run shot over the left-center field wall scored Emily Marks from first. She had walked to lead off the frame.
UA added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on four singles to score the 10th and winning run and end the game in five, 10-2.
Amber Janneck led off the game with a single, while Jessica Nance and Marnitz had back-to-back singles in the third to account for the Wildcats’ four hits against Jennifer Wright.
Allen evens her record at 9-9 after allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings of work. Amy Kendall tossed the final 1.2 innings and gave up two runs on five hits on the day.
The three-game series wraps up Sunday, Mar. 20, with a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
