Joiner Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Griffin Joiner has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of the Hopkinsville, Ky., native's career and the first weekly honor of the season for the Wildcats.
Joiner led all Wildcat batters with a .571 average en route to receiving All-Tournament team honors at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational where UK earned a 3-2 record. She scored five times and collected eight hits in 14 at-bats. She enjoyed her first career perfect outing at the plate in a 5-4 loss to No. 12 Louisiana-Lafayette where she notched three hits and also reached on a hit by pitch.
In a 10-2 win over Stephen F. Austin, Joiner became the second UK player this season to score three runs in a single game. Furthermore, Joiner put together a six-game hitting streak which ranks as the second longest stretch on the team. She also tallied four consecutive games with at least one RBI which was paced by a two-RBI day against the Lady Jacks.
Joiner is the first Wildcat to earn Freshman of the Week honors since Rachel Riley claimed the award in 2009.
After an 18-game start to the season on the road the Wildcats will open its 2012 season at the UK Softball Complex with a three-game set against No. 2/1 Alabama beginning Friday, March 9 at 6 p.m. ET.
