Softball Headed to Frost Classic in Chattanooga
Feb. 25, 2010
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The UK softball team is back on the road for its third consecutive tournament, this week the Wildcats will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Frost Classic.
Kentucky is riding a five-game winning streak after dispersing of Florida Atlantic, Maryland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh in Boca Raton just last week. Kentucky went 5-0 in the tournament and claimed the crown by knocking off the host team Owls for the second time in three days.
Pitching was the key for the Blue and White last week as all three of UK's starters claimed a victory. Senior Amber Matousek tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in an extra inning complete game effort against Florida Atlantic on Friday. Sophomore Chanda Bell captured a pair of wins and fanned 23 batters in 14 innings of action. Sophomore Rachel Riley was tremendous with 14 scoreless innings, just six hits and three walks allowed and she struck out 10 batters.
Freshman Kara Dill has been a highlight for the Wildcats performing in a designated player slot and earning some time on the field at third base. Dill posted at least one hit in every game last week to lead the squad.
Kentucky will face Evansville, Kansas, Lipscomb and Chattanooga this weekend. On Friday the Wildcats take on Evansville who will take the field for the first time this season. Kansas is 5-5 on the year and UK will meet the Jayhawks following the game with Evansville. On Saturday, Kentucky plays back-to-back games with a 7-1 Lipscomb squad and a 7-2 Chattanooga team.
Kentucky will first face Evansville to open the Frost Classic this weekend. The Purple Aces will make their 2010 debut against the Wildcats when they hit the field in Chattanooga. Evansville returns five starters and two pitchers from the 2009 season.
Following that contest UK will have little rest as Kansas is up next for the Wildcats. The Jayhawks are 5-5 on the season thus far. Alex Jones has started all 10 games for Kansas and boasts a .417 batting average with three RBI and a pair of extra base hits. Jones also holds a 2-2 mark in the pitcher's circle with a team-best 2.96 ERA and 16 strikeouts.
Saturday, UK faces off with Lipscomb to begin the day. The Bisons possess a 7-1 overall mark which includes a win over Western Kentucky. Lipscomb is led by Kellie Sirus' .524 average at the plate and the team holds a .362 batting average. Whitney Kiihnl is 5-0 in the circle with an impressive 0.23 ERA and 51 strikeouts.
UK will wrap up action against the host Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday afternoon. The Mocs are 7-2 on the year heading into the tournament.
