April 14, 2000
OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Kentucky softball team split a doubleheader with the Ole Miss Rebels Friday evening at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. UK scored a 2-1 victory over the Rebels in the opener, the Cats' first win over the Rebels in school history. UM captured the second game, 3-1.
UK (26-20, 8-6 Southeastern Conference) jumped on the Rebels in the top of the first when freshman Nikki Jones scored on a throwing error by UM pitcher Holly Burris. Jones advanced to third on a bunt by UK catcher Lyndsey Angus, however Burris overthrew first base, allowing Jones to score.
The Cats added another run in the sixth on Leslie Kwiatkowski's RBI-single to center field, scoring Beth Fogle from third to give UK a 2-0 lead.
UM's Heather Swinney hit a solo shot over the right field fence, her fifth round-tripper of the season, in the bottom of the sixth off UK starter Keary Camunas for the game's final margin of 2-1.
Camunas improved to 15-10 on the season, setting the UK school mark for wins in a single season. The Lake Forest, Calif., native struck out five batters, while UM hurler Holly Burris struck out six batters, dropping her record to 10-12.
In the second game, Lindsay Price's RBI-single scored Mandy Shklar from second, giving the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
UK tied the game in the third inning on Beth Fogle's run-scoring single to left field. With the bases loaded and one out, Leslie Kwiatkowski struck out and Tiffany Kruse flied out to second base as the Rebels escaped the jam.
In the bottom of the third, UM (18-33, 5-13 SEC) pushed two runners across to take a 3-1 victory as the Rebels held UK scoreless through final four innings.
UM pitcher Jennifer Hughes, who struck out a career-high 10 batters, improved to 4-5 on the season, while UK's Morgan Marr fell to 5-5.
UK returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when the Cats travel to Starkville, Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The doubleheader will begin at 1:30 p.m. (EST).
