Kentucky Falls in Rubber Match Against Mississippi
March 16, 2003
The University of Kentucky softball team (9-15, 1-5) fell in the third game of the SEC series with Ole Miss, 14-7, Sunday at the UK Softball Complex. The 14 runs and the 18 hits by the Rebels (10-14, 2-3) are both season highs for a Kentucky opponent.
As was the case in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, the first inning saw a lot of runs go on the board. Ole Miss pounded out seven hits in the top of the inning to score the first five runs.
In the top of the second, following a Jenny Cox walk, the Rebels' DeDe Justice hit one her two home runs on the day to add to the Ole Miss lead. Cox's second home run came in the next inning. That was part of a four run third and gave UM the 11-4 lead.
The Cats added a run in the fourth and two in the sixth but Ole Miss held on for the victory, 14-7.
Nikki Jones went 2-3 on the day, which extended her hitting streak to 14 games, tying a career high. She has also had at least two hits in six straight games.
The Cats will have a day off before they play host to Georgia in a three game series on Tuesday and Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex. The Dogs are currently ranked 10th in the nation.
