Miami, Fla. - The University of Kentucky softball team rounded out their participation at the Fun & Sun Classic in Miami, Fla., with a loss to Illinois State, 4-3. The Cats finished the tournament in fourth place with a 1-4 record.

The Wildcats threatened to score in the top of the first inning when they loaded the bases with only one out. But Redbirds' pitcher Corey Harris struck out two Kentucky batters to end the inning. The score remained at zero until ISU put a run up in the bottom of the fifth.

Kentucky struck back in the top half of the next inning. Sophomore Jessica Nance doubled to deep center field. Senior Lyndsey Angus beat out the throw on a chopper to the shortstop. Junior Rachel Friberg then stepped to the plate and hit a towering home run to left field giving the Cats a 3-1 lead.

Illinois State wasn't about to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the seventh, the Redbirds loaded the bases with only one out. Dominique Borba hit a line drive that landed just in front of Nance in centerfield, scoring Carly Weinstein. On the mound for the Cats, freshman Becky Abner walked in the tying run. With the bases loaded and still only one out, Abner settled down, struck the next batter out, and got the final batter to ground out to second. The score was tied at three and the teams would play extra innings.

Playing the international tiebreaker rule where a runner is placed at second base to start the inning, Kentucky was unable to score, leaving the door open for the Redbirds. In their half of the eighth, a fly ball to left field by Katie Shifflet allowed Mandy Garner to tag up and score, giving ISU the 4-3 victory.

Wildcat shortstop Rachel Friberg was named to the all-tournament team after batting .357 with a double and a home run.

Next up for the Wildcats will be the Stanford Tournament in Palo Alto, Calif., Feb. 14-16.
