Gilliland Awarded Spot on National Team of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior Arin Gilliland was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in Kentucky’s 3-1 NCAA Tournament win over Ohio State on Friday, as well as assisting on Zoe Swift’s goal, giving her three points on the night.

Gilliland moved up into elite company with her three points on Friday night, as she became just the 11th person in 2013 to record double-digit goals and assists on the season in NCAA soccer. Gilliland also tallied her team-high fourth multi-point game of the season.

The Lexington, Ky., native scored the game-winning goal for Kentucky in the 54th minute on a breakaway from midfield after winning a tackle at the stripe and then carrying the ball into the attacking third 1v1 with the keeper. Gilliland then slotted the ball far post with her left foot, giving Kentucky the 2-0 lead at the time.

Gilliland, a MAC Hermann Award finalist, continued her assault on the UK record books, tallying her 74th-career point, moving into fourth all-time at UK for career points. She also shot the ball a team-high eight times, which put her at 94 shots for the season, setting a new Kentucky record for shots in a single season.

This is the third time this season that Gilliland has been named to the TopDrawer National Team of the Week, and the fifth time this season a Wildcat has been selected to the team. Zoe Swift and Kelli Hubly who have also received the honor.

The Wildcats’ season continues on Friday night at 10:30 p.m. ET with Kentucky traveling to Los Angeles, Calif., to face No. 2/2 UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Live stats, as well as updated NCAA Tournament information, can be found at UKathletics.com.
