Cats Avenge Earlier Loss; Pounce On Minnesota, 2-0
Women's soccer collects 14th-straight win in the first day of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 29, 1999) -- The 14th-ranked University of Kentucky women's soccer team exacted revenge against Minnesota and handed the Golden Gophers a 2-0 loss on the first day of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge Friday evening at the UK Soccer Complex.
UK, which fell to Minnesota 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, jumped on the Gophers in the first half and never let up as the Cats claimed their school record 14th straight victory.
Forward Keri Boyce put UK (15-2-1) on the board at the 30:58 mark of the first half when she netted a four-yard shot directly in front of the goal. Boyce's shot hit the left post and bounced in. It was the freshman's 11th goal of the season and Deanna Stayton was credited with an assist on the play.
Ten minutes later, sophomore forward Annie Gage faked out UM goalkeeper Dana Larson and put the ball into an empty net, giving the Cats a 2-0 lead and the victory. Senior Allison Peppers assisted on Gage's 14th goal of the season.
"It was a hard fought match out there," UK coach Warren Lipka said. "We put away our chances when we had them and we're happy to come away with the win. We are looking forward to playing a tough Michigan squad on Sunday which will be a special day for our seniors."
The Cats outshot UM (11-6-0), 21-15 while the Gophers out cornered UK six to two.
UK sophomore keeper Beth Wells recorded nine saves in posting her sixth shutout of the season.
UK returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 31, when the Cats play host to the 19th-ranked Michigan Wolverines at 3 p.m. Sunday is Senior Day for UK as Hope Deutschle, Brooke Hergesell, Allison Peppers, and Deanna Stayton will be honored before the game. Alabama will take on Minnesota in the first game of the day, Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
In the first match of the SEC/Big Ten Challenge on Friday, Michigan (13-4-1) defeated Alabama 2-1. The Wolverines outshot the Crimson Tide (6-13-0) 35-4 but were only able to net two goals.
