Women’s Soccer Kicks Off SEC With LSU Friday Night
The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will open its Southeastern Conference schedule this week as it hosts Louisiana State on Friday, Sept. 23, at the UK Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., following the men’s soccer game with Western Michigan at 5 p.m.
This marks the ninth meeting between the Wildcats and Tigers. UK owns an 8-0 advantage in the all-time series. The Cats are 5-7 in conference openers, including a 2-2 mark when playing those contests at home. They have won five straight SEC openers after defeating LSU by a final score of 2-0 last season in Baton Rouge.
The Cats are the only undefeated team in the SEC with a 4-0-4 record this season after tying Western Kentucky in their last outing. The eight-game streak without a loss to start the season is the longest such streak in school history. UK won seven straight to begin the 2001 campaign, while its longest unbeaten streak came when it won 15 straight in 1999.
LSU brings a 4-2-1 record to Lexington this weekend. The Tigers are unbeaten in five straight games including a tie at Birmingham-Southern on Sept. 19.
“We’re excited to open conference play this weekend,” said Lipka. “This is a strong league and what we play for all season is the chance to advance to the SEC tournament.”
This season marks the 10-year anniversary of Kentucky women’s soccer’s first SEC regular season and tournament titles. Championship team members Carrie Kuhnell-Born, Kim Bucci, Carrie Landrum-Harper, Brittany Mobley-Kanavy, Megan May, Nicole Ruszkowski-Place and Torie Hesser-Schellhas are all scheduled to be in attendance and will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.
This two-game SEC homestand continues on Sunday, Sept. 25, as UK hosts Arkansas in a 1:00 p.m. start.
