UK Women's Soccer Beats Arkansas
Moves Within One Game of SEC East Crown
LEXINGTON, Ky. - University of Kentucky midfielder Brooke Hergesell scored twice in the second half to lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 win over Southeastern Conference rival Arkansas at the UK Soccer Complex Friday night. The win improves UK to 8-8-1 overall, but more importantly, puts the Wildcats at 6-1-0 in the SEC and in a position to claim at least a share of the Eastern Division title with a win over arch-rival Vanderbilt on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, Hergesell scored what would prove to be the game-winner just one minute into the second half as her shot from the top of the 18-yard box got past the Arkansas goalkeeper. She added a second goal in the 76th minute, scoring from a Jennifer McMaster pass to put the Wildcats up 2-0. Deanna Stayten scored her first career goal with two minutes remaining to give UK the final margin at 3-0. UK goalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell picked up her second shutout in the last three games with the win.
"This was an important win for us," UK head coach Warren Lipka said. "We still have a shot to win the Eastern Division, but to do so we have to play well enough to beat Vanderbilt on Sunday."
Vanderbilt enters Sunday's game with an overall record of 10-6-0 after posting a 7-0 win over LSU Friday night. The win improved the Commodores to 6-1-0 in the SEC, putting more emphasis on Sunday's meeting. Vanderbilt and Kentucky have split the last six meetings, with Vanderbilt claiming the last win, a 2-1 overtime victory in last season's NCAA Tournament that ended UK's season.
