Gymnasts Set For Regular Season Finale

DENTON, Texas – Kentucky freshmen Krystle Cook, Rachel Riley, Alison Sarucci and Sarai Sevier will have the opportunity to compete in their home state of Texas this weekend when the Cats face Texas Women’s University, No. 17 Missouri and Pennsylvania in Denton, Texas. The quad-meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT Friday night in the Kitty Magee Arena.

“This is a special weekend for our freshman class,” Coach “Mo” Muhammad said. “They all have had family come see them at different meets throughout the year, but this will be a time for them to showcase their growth and improvement in their home state.”

UK’s highly touted freshman class has lived up to its billing since arriving in the Bluegrass nearly eight months ago. Cook, an Austin, Texas native, leads the Wildcats on vault and has a shot at qualifying for the Central Regional Championships as an All-Around performer if Kentucky fails to qualify as a team. Sarucci, who hails from Spring, Texas, has been a solid competitor in every UK meet this year and she has registered the team’s highest bars score (9.900) of the season. Riley (Dallas, Texas) and Sevier (Victoria, Texas) have battled injuries in their inaugural seasons at UK, but have made solid contributions when healthy.

The entire Kentucky team has improved in recent weeks with standout team performances in all events, including floor exercise. Kentucky scored a 39.350 on floor this past weekend against Ball State, the second-highest floor exercise score in school history. Junior standout Michelle Gales led the way with a career-high 9.950 routine, followed by senior Julie Joy and freshman Krystle Cook who registered a pair of 9.875 scores.

Kentucky’s 195.000 score against Ball State raised its RQS to 194.745, which is eighth in the Central Region.

Friday is the Wildcats’ final regular season competition before the SEC Championships, which take place Mar. 20 in Duluth, Ga.
