Gymnastics Hits Road Against No. 1 Florida
LEXINGTON – For the second time this season, the 22nd-ranked Kentucky gymnastics team faces a top-ranked opponent when it meets No. 1 Florida on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla.
The Wildcats are coming off a season high score of 194.325 in a loss to 12th-ranked LSU last week. Senior Krystle Cook competed in the all-around for the first time last week, posting a 39.100 to pace the Wildcats. Fellow senior Lucy Burgin won her second bars title of the year in the meet with a career-high 9.875 while Heather Hite took home her fifth career beam title.
Cook is one of four UK gymnasts slated to compete in the all-around on Friday night, a list that includes three freshmen: Hillary Ferguson, Emily Green and Emilie Rymer. Rymer registered a career-high all-around score of 39.050 last week. The trio are part of a line up that will see 15 of 24 spots filled by freshmen.
The Gators are undefeated on the year, with their only blemish coming in a rare tie on the road againsts then-No. 2 Georgia. Last week, Florida bettered Arkansas on the road.
A year ago, UK tallied its third best score of the season, but still fell to fifth-ranked Florida, 196.425-195.550. Kentucky has beaten Florida just once all time, a home win in 1998.
