Gymnastics Hosts No. 3 Alabama
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky gymnastics team (1-1, 1-0) returns home to Memorial Coliseum Friday, to host the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide. The Wildcats are looking for their second straight SEC victory after defeating Auburn to open the season.
Sophomore Emilie Rymer secured her second career all-around title, as she led a trio of UK gymnasts to individual wins in the Cats’ first loss of the season at Southeast Missouri State. In the loss, Rymer topped the individual performers with her second career all-around title. The sophomore bested the field on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.775. She scored 9.700 on vault, 9.650 on beam, and 9.700 on floor.
In back-to-back meets, sophomore Emily Green and junior Heather Hite have paced the Wildcats with consecutive titles. Green claimed the vault with a career best score of 9.900 in the win over Auburn and followed suit with a win a week later. Hite shared top honors with teammates Kristen O’Shields and Hillary Ferguson in the opening meet. She then secured another title in the floor exercise for the second week in a row. Additionally, she also took first on the beam to add to her team leading 15 career titles.
Alabama enters the meet holding a No. 3 overall national ranking. They are a perfect 2-0 on the season, and are led by sophomore Kassi Price who is ranked first nationally on the uneven bars. Bama defeated Auburn last week on the road as UK and the Tide have each defeated the Tigers early in the season.
The meet is slated to begin on Friday, at 7 pm in Memorial Coliseum. Admission is $5 and free to UK students. In honor of Father-Daughter Night, the UK gymnastics team will be introduced with their fathers. Fans can register to win a $100 prize pack from the UK bookstore. Upon conclusion of the meet, the freshmen gymnasts will sign autographs in the west concourse. Complete results and coverage of the UK gymnastics team can be found at www.ukathletics.com.
