Gymnastics Finishes Seventh at SEC Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Kentucky gymnastics team earned a team score of 193.95 en route to a seventh-place finish at the Southeastern Conference Championships at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday.

Kentucky (9-15) started the meet on vault, scoring a 48.715. The Wildcats were led by seniors Jasmine Minion and Phylicia Reshard, who each scored a 9.8. Fellow senior Andrea Mitchell earned a 9.775, while senior Colleen Williams scored a 9.7 and freshman Audrey Harrison posted a 9.65.

UK had a slight setback on uneven bars, posting a team score of 48. Junior Storey Morris led UK in the event with a 9.725, while sophomore Caitlyn Ciokajlo posted a 9.675. Williams continued her consistent play on the event with a 9.625, while freshman Brittany Canfield scored a 9.575. Reshard and Mitchell wrapped up the UK scoring with a 9.4 and a 9.3, respectively.

The Wildcats performed well on both balance beam and floor exercise. On beam, Kentucky earned a team score of 48.55, receiving impressive 9.75s from Reshard, Mitchell and Morris. Freshman Audrey Harrison scored a 9.7 on beam, while Ciokajlo posted a 9.6 and Minion a 9.125.

Kentucky concluded the meet on floor exercise with a team score of 48.675. Mitchell led UK on the event with a 9.85, while Minion and Reshard each earned a 9.8. Harrison was solid on floor with a 9.625, while fellow freshman Kayla Sienkowski posted a 9.6. Freshman Holly Cunningham, who was competing for only the third time on floor this season, scored a career high 9.575.

Alabama won its seventh SEC Championship with a team score of 197.225, while Florida finished second with a 196.975. Georgia's Cassidy McComb won the all-around title with a 39.4.

The NCAA will announce Monday the 36 teams that qualify for the 2011 NCAA Gymnastics Championships. Six qualifying teams will compete in each regional, with the top two teams from each regional advancing to the NCAA Championship finals in Cleveland, Ohio, April 15-17.
