GymKats Drop Dual Effort In Provo
Feb. 28, 2003 The University of Kentucky gymnastics team dropped a dual meet to Brigham Young on Friday, Feb. 28, at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. Kentucky's best performance of the night came from sophomore Lindsay Cameron on the vault, where she topped her career-high with a score of 9.875. The GymKats began the evening on the uneven bars, where they were led by junior Aronda Primault's season-high 9.775. The Cats had trouble staying on the bar, though, and were forced to count a pair of falls toward their team total of 47.075. BYU took the lead after the first rotation, posting a season-high mark of 49.000. Kentucky moved to the vault, its strongest event so far this season, for the second rotation. Cameron was competing a 10.0 vault for only the second week and nailed it for the second week in a row. A 9.825 from Primault and a pair of 9.800's from seniors Julie Gore and Melanie Zaharias pushed to a team score of 49.000 on the event. For the Cats, it was the fourth time this season that they scored at least 49 points on the vault, surpassing their total from a year ago. The Cougars would set another season-high mark by posting a 49.275 on the bars to hang on to their lead halfway through the meet. UK's third rotation was the floor exercise. Zaharias and sophomore Krista Prestigiacomo started strongly for the Cats, each posting scores of 9.800. But the explosive GymKats could not stay in bounds and were forced to count a total of three-tenths worth of deductions, lowering their team score to 48.425.
Kentucky finished the evening on the beam. Sophomore Michelle Gales tied her career-best with a 9.825 in the event. Zaharias and sophomore Kara Prestigiacomo each added 9.775 to Kentucky's total.
With the loss, the GymKats split the season series with the Cougars. Kentucky was victorious in a dual meet against BYU on Jan. 31. Kentucky will finish its three-meet road stint on Saturday, March 8, when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face the GymTide at 3 p.m. ET.
