CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team returns to action this weekend as they are set to tee off at the 2012 Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. Oct. 12-14. The invitational will mark the third tournament for the Wildcats this year after posting first and eighth place finishes in their previous two events.
UK is set to feature a lineup loaded with youth as they will send freshmen Cylia Damerau, Meghan McDougall and Sarah Harris, along with junior Liz Breed and senior Betsie Johnson to compete in the tournament.
“Overall you have a field where you’ve got 10 teams who are in the top-15,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We’re ranked 26/27 in the two different polls after two events. I’m really excited about this field because it’s going to show where we are and I really want my girls to be able to handle this.”
Joining the Cats is a competitive 17 team field. Schools in attendance include Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Central Florida, Colorado, Duke, Florida, LSU, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi, North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest.
The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will feature a round of 18 holes three consecutive days, beginning on Friday. Tee times will start at 8:51 a.m. ET off holes No. 1 and 10 on Friday and Saturday, while a shotgun start will begin play on Sunday at approximately 9:15 a.m.
The invitational will be played at the UNC Finley Golf Course and is a par-72, 6,285 yard layout.
“If we can have a good performance, it would really boost us,” Borst said. “It would be a big booster and help us in a lot of different areas. It will give us the opportunity to play against the best and see how we fare.”
