LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team will tee off Feb. 12 at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. The three-day event kicking off Kentucky’s spring season is being held at RedTail Golf Club, a par-72, 6,276-yard layout.
The tournament field consists of 17 programs ranked in the Top 100 and four individuals ranked in the top 25, including Kentucky junior Ashleigh Albrecht. The field consists of Auburn, Baylor, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Memphis, Miami, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Texas, Texas-San Antonio, Tulane, UCF and USF.
Kentucky will tee off Sunday morning from the first tee in nine minute intervals starting with junior Betsie Johnson at 11:00 ET, followed by senior Ashlee Rose, Albrecht, junior Heather Lott, sophomore Liz Breed and junior Megan Moir at 11:45.
Kentucky has had past success at the UCF Challenge. In 2011, Kentucky placed fourth overall while junior Ashleigh Albrecht notched her first career first-place finish with an 8-under-par.
“We are looking forward to kicking off our spring season at the UCF Challenge this weekend,” said UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “We have great memories from last year, so this is going to be a great starting point for us.”
The Cats are coming off an impressive fall season with three top-10 finishes in four events. Kentucky started the season hot with a third-place finish at the Texas A&M “Mo”Morial, led by Albrecht and Rose’s top-10 finishes.
Coming off the “Mo”Morial, Kentucky grabbed its first victory of the year at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational. In rough weather conditions, Kentucky was able to persevere and make a comeback in the final round to earn the eight-stroke victory. Albrecht finished first overall, individually, while Rose and Johnson joined her in the top 10.
After competing in the Mercedes-Benz SEC/Pac-12 Challenge, the Cats finished the fall season strong with a fourth-place finish at the Alamo Invitational. Albrecht and Breed led Kentucky with top-10 finishes.
Kentucky has been led by Albrecht, finishing in the top 10 in all four events of the fall. Albrecht’s first-place finish at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational was the second individual win of her career. In the tough competition of the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge, Albrecht finished tied for seventh.
