April 6, 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Through one round at the 2012 Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C., the University of Kentucky women's golf team sits in 10th place, 14 strokes off the lead. Kentucky finished the opening round with a 16-over-par 304. "We didn't quite play the way we wanted to today. We made too many big mistakes that cost us doubles and triples," said UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst. "However, we are very close to playing well, we just need to work on our decision making and making sure we play smart." Northwestern sits atop the leaderboard after shooting a 2-over-par 290 on the first day. South Carolina is two strokes off the lead in second at 4-over-par 292. Tennessee is in third at 5-over-par 293 with Wake Forest in fourth at 7-over-par 295. Ohio State and Florida State round out the top five in a tie for fifth at 9-over-par 297. Junior Betsie Johnson continued her consistent spring with a 3-over-par 75 in the first round. Johnson tied Lott for a team-high four birdies in the first round and finished in a tie for 28th. In her first round back from an ankle injury, junior Ashleigh Albrecht shot a 6-over-par 78 on Friday. Albrecht sunk three birdies on day one to leave her in a tie for 52nd. "We had a good practice session after the round," said coach Borst. "I feel confident that we will come back and play better tomorrow."
