April 4, 2014
OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team posted an eight-over par, 296, in the first round of the Rebel Intercollegiate to sit in a tie for eighth place on Friday afternoon at the Ole Miss Golf Course. Due to the possibility of inclement weather on Sunday, the final 36 holes will be played on Saturday. Tee times begin at 9:15 a.m. ET with a shotgun start.
GRU Augusta sits atop the team standings at two-under par, 297, while East Tennessee State (+4), Coastal Carolina (+4), Texas State (+5), Tulane (+6), Harvard (+6) and Kennesaw State (+6) complete the top five. Five players are currently tied atop the individual standings at two-under par, 70.
“We did a lot of good things for most of our round today,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “However, we need to continue to stay aggressive and determined for the entire 18 holes. Tomorrow will be another 36-hole day, so it will be very important for us to commit to our game plan and stay patient throughout the day.”
Four of freshman Alessandra Walker’s five birdies in the first round came on the front nine holes on Friday. Walker leads all Wildcats after 18 holes at one-over par, 73, which places her in a tie for 15th.
Freshman Haley Mills and sophomore Sarah Harris each turned in rounds of two-over par, 74, on Friday. The UK duo is currently tied for 31st. Mills ranks third on the team with three first round birdies.
Rounding out the Kentucky lineup were sophomore Cylia Damerau and senior Liz Breed. Damerau is just one stroke back of Mills and Harris with a three-over par, 75. The Cham, Switzerland, native is tied for 39th. Breed shot a five-over par, 77, to put her in a tie for 56th.
