ORLANDO, Fla. – Following a long layoff from tournament competition, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team returned to action Sunday with round one of the UCF Challenge and will enter Monday’s second round tied for sixth place after the first 18 holes. Second round action begins Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET.

UCF sits atop the standings at six-under par, 282, while Miami (-1), East Tennessee State (E), GRU Augusta (+2) and South Florida (+2) complete the top five. UCF’s Fanny Cnops leads all players at five-under par, 67.

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Texas State (+3), Iowa State (+4), SMU (+4), Florida International (+6), Minnesota (+7), New Mexico (+10), Campbell (+10), Kennesaw State (+12), Georgia State (+12), East Carolina (+13), Wisconsin (+15), Tulane (+20) and Western Carolina (+25).

“We had a solid first round today,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “You never really know what to expect coming out of your winter training, but it felt really good to get back on grass after using our indoor facility and I think the girls handled the golf course well overall. They stayed patient and continued to create opportunities all throughout their round which paid dividends towards the end.”

Freshman Alessandra Walker played a steady, consistent round on Sunday by recording just one bogey on the afternoon to go with a couple birdies. Walker leads all Wildcats at one-under par, 71, which places her in a tie for ninth with two rounds to go.

Sitting just a stroke behind Walker is sophomore Cylia Damerau at even-par (72). The Cham, Switzerland, native recorded pars on each of the first 12 holes before bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14. However, Damerau was able to bounce back and birdie No. 15 and No. 18 to head into the clubhouse at even-par and tied for 17th.

Freshman Haley Mills turned in a solid back nine to finish off the first 18 holes at one-over par, 73 and tied for 26th. Mills registered two of her three birdies on the back nine.

Senior Liz Breed finished the day with a three-over par, 75, to place her in a tie for 49th. Sophomore Sarah Harris rounded out the UK lineup with a four-over par, 76, to put her in a tie for 66th.

Playing as an individual, freshman Megan Kinney turned in a scorecard of seven-over par, 79. Kinney is tied for 90th after the first day.

Following the UCF Challenge, UK will compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., from March 7-9. For more information on the University of Kentucky women’s golf team please visit UKathletics.com and follow on Twitter @UKWomensGolf.
