Samantha Drake

1.     What’s your hometown?  “Bardstown, Ky.”

2.     Did you grow up a Kentucky fan? “Actually, we were Louisville fans until my brother came to Kentucky to play football and now we are all UK fans.”

3.     Why did you choose Kentucky? “It was the best fit for me as a person. It is a great academic school and the athletic side of UK is awesome. It was the complete package.”

4.     What does being a Kentucky Wildcat mean to you? “It means a lot to me because as a Kentuckian, I get to go out and represent this program and this state.”

5.     What has impressed you most about this coaching staff? “I’m most impressed with how willing they are to work with us. There are always there when we need them and they help us with basketball and school.”

6.     What is the one thing about college life that has surprised you the most? “I am surprised about all the freedom we have.  My brother went here and I knew a lot about college life but I’m still getting used to everything.”

7.     Did you come from a sporting family and did that influence you to get involved with sports? “Yes, my mom and dad both played basketball. My brother, T.C. Drake, was a tight end on the football team at UK and both of my sisters are playing basketball now.”

8.     You’ve been in school for a couple of weeks now, how are classes going? “They are going well. I like all of my classes. I’m getting to know the teachers and so far it’s been a good experience. I learned the campus when I was in summer school so I’m getting around pretty good.”

10.     How have the coaches helped you with the transition from high school basketball to college? “They have just advised me on how college basketball is a whole new level from high school. They have talked to me and shown me in individual instruction how hard I have to work as a post player. I need to work on my shot and get in shape because our team runs and pushes the tempo the entire game.”

10.  What’s your major? “I want to major in sports medicine.”

11.  What is your dream job? “Hopefully to play in the WNBA but also to be an athletic trainer.”

12.  What is your favorite shot on the court? “I like the layup and post moves, scoring underneath.”

13.  Do you enjoy being tall? “Yes, I like being tall and doctors say I’m going to be even taller. They think I’ll grow to be 6-foot-6. In the last three years I’ve grown two inches. My boyfriend is 6-8 so I’d like being just two inches shorter than him.”

14.  What are you most looking forward to this season? “I can’t wait to step out on the court at Memorial Coliseum. I’m excited but nervous to see all the fans. I can’t wait to put on that Kentucky uniform and get out there and represent UK.”

15.  How do you think you’re going to feel the first time you step out on the floor in Memorial Coliseum? “It’s going to be an adrenaline rush because I’ll be actually be out there playing on the same floor where I used to be a fan. I know I’ll have a lot of energy and I’ll be excited to get that first win. It feels good to be a part of this team.”

16.  Has there been any one player who has taken you under their wing to help the transition? “Everyone on the team has helped me. We are one big family. We have each other’s backs and we go to each other for support.”

17.  Is there a motto you live by each day? “’All is fair in love and basketball.’  Basketball is a part of my life just like my family. You have to love the sport to be so dedicated to it.”

18.  Have you had a welcome- to-the-SEC moment in a pickup game this summer? “I had one this summer in a pickup game. I was playing against Brittany Henderson and was posting her up. She is really good at using her body to defend and she knocked me back. I wasn’t expecting that kind of physicality.”

19.   What are your thoughts about playing in the SEC? “I think it will be a challenge to play in the SEC because it’s the best conference in collegiate women’s basketball. The athletes are bigger, faster and more competitive.”

20.  What most impresses you most about Coach Mitchell? “Coach Mitchell means a lot to me. He’s all about the players, being a family and sticking together. He represents UK in the right way. He teaches us to respect each other and that it’s not just all about basketball. He wants to win but it’s more about family with him.”

21.  What is something most people don’t know about you? “I was a cheerleader until I was in the sixth grade.”
