Women's Hoops Hosts South Carolina
Wildcats look to snap losing streak.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 12, 2000) -- The University of Kentucky women's basketball team will play host to South Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum. Sunday's game is Take A Kid To The Game Day. Admission if free for children ages 18 and under with a paying adult.
The Wildcats (11-10, 3-6 Southeastern Conference) look to snap a five-game losing streak after falling to Arkansas last Sunday, 83-70. The Cats won both meetings with South Carolina last season, winning 78-76 in Columbia, S.C., and 93-65 in Lexington. UK leads the overall series 15-7 and is 8-2 against the Lady Gamecocks in Memorial Coliseum. The Cats have not lost to USC at home since 1996.
"We've made some adjustments in practice this week to help us match up with South Carolina's size," UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. "They are a young basketball team and a very good basketball team. They are quick and they have a good inside game. It will be a battle."
South Carolina, who lost its leading scorer Shaun Gortman (14.8 points per game) last week to a season-ending knee injury, enters Sunday's game, 12-11 overall and 2-8 in the SEC. The Lady Gamecocks went head-to-head with No. 2 Georgia on Thursday, falling 84-61 in Athens. USC, down by only nine at the half, charted four players in double figures including a game-high 17 points from Jocelyn Penn, off the bench. Penn is USC's second leading scorer behind Gortman, averaging 12.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
In addition to free admission, all kids can take place in interactive activities
on the upper concourse in Memorial Coliseum starting at 1 p.m. Various UK
athletes will be available to sign autographs and kids of all ages can have
their picture made with Scratch, the official mascot of UK women's
basketball. The first 1,000 fans will receive free Kentucky Wildcat key
chains. Admission is $5 for adults.
