RedHawks of Miami Too Much For Wildcats
Dec. 5, 2001
Oxford, Ohio - Three Wildcats scored in double figures but it wouldn't be enough, however, as the Miami RedHawks defeated the Kentucky women's basketball team, 73-64, on Wednesday. Sophomore SeSe Helm led with 18 points while senior LaTonya McDole and junior Rita Adams followed with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Kentucky (3-3) shot 48.3 percent in the first half and led 31-28 at the intermission despite trailing by as many as seven with six minutes remaining. The Cats went on a 5-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by freshman Sara Potts and a field goal by Helm. UK's lead finally came at 3:16 in the first half led by Helm's eight first half points.
Miami forward Kim Lancaster sparked the RedHawks in the second half, scoring all 11 of her points in the paint. MU (4-2) also nailed seven three-pointers in the game and shot 49 percent compared to UK's 45.2 percent.
"We hit our layups in this game and we win," UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. "We had plenty of opportunities to take this game and we didn't capitalize on them."
Heather Cusick led Miami with 16 points and eight assists. Colleen Day followed with 15. Kentucky outrebounded Miami, 36-34, led by Helm's nine boards.
Kentucky leads the overall series with Miami, 10-2. It was the Cats' first loss to Miami since 1995, breaking a five-game win streak against the RedHawks.
The Cats continue on the road, traveling to Bowling Green, Ky., for an intrastate battle with Western Kentucky on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
