Kentucky-North Carolina A&T Postgame Quotes

Jan. 1, 2009

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Kentucky Head Coach Matthew Mitchell

Opening Statement …
“We were very happy to get this win because North Carolina A&T has a very good team. While we didn't play our best tonight, I was pleased that we went on a big run in the second half to get control of the game. We didn't finish off the game particularly well, but still a good win for us and we are happy with the win.”

On if the return of Carly Ormerod tonight …
“I just talked to her in the locker room and she said she felt great and it felt good to get back on the floor. It is remarkable for her to play that well with no practice time recently. I thought that she came in and gave us a spark, and the crowd gave her a warm reception, too. It was good to see her back and for us to be full strength we need her playing.”

On the Aggies' late run that cut into UK's 19-point lead …
“What happens sometimes, is that your players get a good rhythm going and then you substitute and the substitutes don't keep that rhythm going. It was a lack of intensity and our substitutes have to come in and keep the intensity high. It will be something that we learn from.”

On Kentucky's defense …
“It was the key to the last four minutes. I thought we played an impressive defensive game, even in the first half, holding them to 25 points. They got around 10 points off of our breakdowns so it was a good half of basketball defensively. That is a good sign for us and we were able to hold them 10 points under their season average. Overall, it was a good defensive night but could have been really something special if we would have finished the game off.”

On the clutch free-throw shooting for Kentucky …
“Since I have been here, that is the best we have shot from the free-throw line. For me that is a sign of our team not getting g rattled. At one point, our lead was down to seven and it wasn't looking good but they still had to foul and we knew that if we make our foul shots we would win. That is what we did and I was really impressed with our free-throw performance tonight.”

On Eleia Roddy and Victoria Dunlap's double-double night …
“I thought the way they competed on the board helped us keep our spirits high. We didn't shoot the ball well tonight but the way we were able to rebound and finish some plays really helped. Eleia and Victoria both and some monster rebounds that finished some tough plays off for us. North Carolina A&T is a tough team and they are going to be a powerhouse in their conference. For us to be able to rebound the way they did tonight, pleased me.”

On Jackie Sanders' absence from the game …
“Unfortunately, Jackie was dismissed from the team this morning. There were some conditions that she had to meet coming back from her earlier suspension and she wasn't able to do that. We are sad about her dismissal and hope that she will do well wherever she ends up.”

Kentucky Players

#24, Amber Smith, So., PG

On Kentucky's 19-point lead dwindling to seven points…
“I think that we got very complacent and we weren't ready for the press. Coach was telling us what to run, but we weren't making hard cuts and doing the little things that you have to do to get open. We lost focus some but we got the win and now we have to learn from it and make sure it doesn't happen again.”

On the clutch free-throw shooting …
“It says that we are improving and working hard on that in practice. We are getting better in shooting the ball. We are getting shots up in practice and it is starting to show on the court.”

On if she feels this team is getting stronger defensively …
“We take proud in playing defense and rebounding the ball. We are definitely coming into the game wanting to shut down their key players and their role players. I thought that we did a great job of that tonight but I think that we got complacent at the end. We will learn from that and do better next time.”

#5, Carly Morrow, So., G

On Kentucky's 19-point lead dwindling to seven points…
“We lost our defensive intensity, which is something that we can't do down the stretch. We set some defensive goals and we didn't hold to that in the last four minutes and that is something that we need to fix before SEC play.”

On if it was good to see Carly Ormerod play …
“Yeah, it was awesome to see her out there tonight. For missing almost a month and not practicing at all she did a great job. For her to step out on the court and play like she did tonight it looked like she hasn't missed a day of practice. She made some great passes as did Amber and Amani tonight as well.”

On if she is more comfortable on the court this season …
“Yeah, I believe I am. Coach Elzy and I have been working on getting me to finish my shot more forward. I have been fading away some and we have been spending some extra time, 10 or 15 minutes every day working on that and it has really made a difference.”

North Carolina A&T Head Coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs

On the game…
"I think we should have had the effort in the beginning of the game like we had in the second half. I know there were a lot of things that happened that hurt us in the first half. I think Kentucky is a great team and we played extremely well tonight. We didn't give up. We came here tonight to win this game but unfortunately that didn't happen. I'm hoping we learn from this game and go on to do what we need to do."

On Brittanie Taylor-James' play…
"She is a scorer and we knew that going into the game. She played some excellent defense tonight also. We are very proud of her. She came off the bench to lead us in scoring tonight with 25 points."

On scoring late in the game…
"We can shoot three-pointers. We were really trying to steal the ball and set up some late three-point shots. We had the right people in the game that can shoot the ball."

On the gameplan…
"To be successful tonight then we needed to rebound. We have a great rebounding team that can really go after the offensive boards. We will miss some shots but we have been great about going after and getting those missed shots. If we could have boxed out a little more and grabbed some rebounds then probably we would have won this game."
