Bawono Has Impressive Day at USF Invitational

University of Kentucky men's tennis senior Edo Bawono continued his great fall season, stretching his winning streak to six matches with two wins in Friday's action at the South Florida Invitational in Tampa, Fla.

The Cats faced Florida Atlantic's roster in the opening day of the round-robin style tournament. Bawono first defeated FA's Doug Devriendt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. In his afternoon match, Bawono continued his domination, taking down Yalen Bilgin, 6-4, 6-4. This moves Bawono to 6-0 for the fall season, his best fall start as a Wildcat.

"Edo continues to play well during the fall season," Coach Dennis Emery said. "He's really doing well this year and I like the tough competitive style of play he's showing."

Other Wildcats taking the courts today included junior Reven Stephens, who defeated his first opponent, Cristian Paiz, 6-0, 6-7, 1-0(9), before falling to Andre Buzzoni, 6-1, 6-3 in afternoon action. Junior Johan Grunditz dropped his morning match to Andre Buzzoni, 2-6,6-3,1-0(5), before taking down Cristian Paiz in the afternoon, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Gustav Pousette also got off to a slow start, falling to Yalin Bilgin, 6-2, 7-6(3) before fighting back to defeat Doug Devriendt, 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) in the afternoon.

Sophomore Elliot Datlow struggled on the court Friday, falling to Codey Lewis, 6-4, 6-1, and Rubin Cruiz, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Justin Kinney, who lost his first round match to Rubin Cruiz, 4-6, 7-6(5),1-0(7), was forced to sit out of his afternoon matchup due to illness.

The doubles team of Bawono and Stephens had an impressive showing, defeating FA's Jirak and Devriendt, 8-5 to claim the Cats' only doubles victory for the day. Pousette and Kinney were defeated by the team of Bilgin/Lewis, 8-4, while Gruditz and Datlow were taken down by Paiz and Buzzoni, 8-4.

The Cats return to action tomorrow when they face host South Florida. The tournament continues through Sunday, Oct. 22, when the Cats wrap up action against Wake Forest.
