LEXINGTON, Ky. -- For the fourth straight season, the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team has been picked to host the International Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend as part of the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship on Jan. 25-28 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.
The Wildcats were chosen as one of 15 host sites for the event after finishing seventh in the final ITA team rankings released in late May. The No. 7 final ranking was the best for the Kentucky program since it was fifth at the end of the 1997 season. The high final mark tied the third highest final ranking in school history, trailing only the 1992 team that finished sixth and the 1997 squad.
UK will be the No. 1 seed in the Lexington Regional and will host No. 2-seeded Texas, No. 3-seeded South Carolina and No. 4-seeded Michigan State. The first round of the event will feature Kentucky against Michigan State and Texas against South Carolina with the winners from each match meeting in the second round for a chance to advance to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships on Feb. 15-18 in Seattle, Wash. The University of Washington is hosting the national event and automatically qualifies as one of 16 teams to make the national field.
Kentucky hosted the 2012 ITA Kickoff Weekend, posting victories over No. 57 North Carolina State and No. 22 Tulsa to advance to the National Indoors for the third consecutive season. UK also hosted the event in 2010 and 2011, defeating Wake Forest and Michigan in 2010 and Boise State and Wake Forest in 2011.
Including Kentucky, all 15 teams that earned a 2012 ITA top-15 final ranking received a host bid for the kickoff weekend. The Wildcats are one of five Southeastern Conference teams to be chosen to play host to the event, joining Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida and Ole Miss. Fellow SEC schools Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt will participate in the tournament.
Official dates and times for the event will be released at a later time.
