TULSA, Okla. -
A six-match win streak by Kentucky tennis sophomore Eric Quigley ended Saturday with a 7-6(7), 6-3 loss to No. 40 Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma in the singles quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa's Case Tennis Center.
No. 70 Quigley opened the day in a tight set against Daescu that went the distance. The players fought to a 5-5 tie in the first set and split the next pair of games to force a tiebreaker. Extra points were necessary in the breaker as well before the Sooner claimed the tiebreak and set win at 9-7. In the second, Daescu earned the edge in service breaks to pull out the set 6-3.
As a result, Quigley suffered just his second loss of the fall season. He stands 9-2 after two tournaments and claims triumphs against four ranked opponents, including two top-10 wins over No. 1 Oleksandr Nedevyesov of Oklahoma State and No. 9 Sanam Singh of Virginia, a 2009 NCAA Men's Singles Semifinalist.
The All-American Championship tournament is the first leg of the ITA Grand Slam. Quigley's quarterfinal run marked the second consecutive Grand Slam that a Wildcat has advanced to the final eight. Last spring UK's Bruno Agostinelli made a quarterfinal run at the NCAA Men's Singles Championships to close his final season in the Blue and White.
Later in the day, Oklahoma State's Nedovyesov exacted revenge on the doubles court against Quigley for his singles loss at the hands of the Wildcat earlier this week. The top-ranked singles player and doubles partner Aleksey Bessonov edged the No. 24 tandem of Quigley and junior Brad Cox 8-6 to advance to the doubles semifinals.
The Wildcats are back in action a little closer to home next week at the University of Louisville Invitational beginning Friday in the Derby City.
