No. 9 Men's Tennis Earns 4-0 Win Over Auburn

LEXINGTON, Ky. -
The ninth-ranked University of Kentucky men’s tennis team recorded its second victory of the weekend and ninth consecutive home win, earning a 4-0 decision over No. 56 Auburn at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex on Sunday. The match was moved indoors after the start due to rain and eventually stopped after UK clinched the win.
Kentucky improves to 13-6, 3-2 in the Southeastern Conference after claiming a 5-2 win at No. 45 Miami (Fla.) on Friday. Auburn slips to 4-8 and 1-4 in the SEC.
The Wildcats jumped out to the early lead after taking the doubles point for the fourth time in their last five matches with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Striking first was the 15th-ranked doubles duo Eric Quigley (Pewee Valley, Ky.) and Brad Cox (Duluth, Ga.). The pair upset No. 8 Tim Puetz and Alex Stamchev 8-5. Next was Alex Lambropoulos (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Alberto Gonzalez (Bradenton, Fla.) overtaking the Tigers duo of Andreas Mies and Michel Monteiro at the wire 9-8 (7-2).
The first of three singles wins for Kentucky came at No. 4 where UK freshman Anthony Rossi (Martigues, France) overpowered Auburn’s Lopasso in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. The next Wildcats’ point came at No. 6 singles when sophomore Graeme Dyce (Edinburgh, Scotland) rallied to beat Oliver Strecker 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. The deciding UK point came at No. 5 singles where junior Alberto Gonzalez outlasted Auburn’s Andrea Mies 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-2.
Matches that did not finish included close affairs at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles. UK’s Eric Quigley, ranked at No. 10 in the nation, was in a battle with No. 23 Tim Puetz 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-2. UK’s Alex Musialek (Dax, France), listed at No. 37 was in the third set against Tim Hewitt, 3-6, 6-3, 3-2 at No. 2 singles. Brad Cox was back-and-forth with No. 93 Alex Stamchev 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 4-5 at No. 3 singles.
Kentucky will be back in SEC action a week from today against Alabama on Sunday, March 28, at 1 p.m. ET.
