LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A year removed from the program’s first NCAA Tournament hosting bid since 2003, the Kentucky men’s soccer team returns 10 letterwinners on its 2013 roster, which was announced by UK head coach Johan Cedergren on Thursday afternoon.
“We are looking forward to getting to work with this group,” Cedergren said. “We have a lot of competition for the returnees. As a staff we spent a lot of time on the road making sure that the players coming in are the right fit for what we want to achieve here. It will be great fun to integrate the new players with the returnees. In the end, we will have passion and a drive to succeed on and off the field.”
Kentucky’s 2013 roster will feature 10 returning letterwinners and a total of 15 newcomers. The Wildcats return three All-Conference USA performers from 2012, including first-team defender Steven Perinovic, who anchored the UK backline from his center back post. Senior goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale shined in a starting role, earning third-team All-Conference USA accolades after sporting a 1.10 goals-against average. Also returning is senior Tyler Riggs, who needs 11 tallies to equal the UK career record for goals, after becoming the first Wildcat to lead the team in scoring for three consecutive years since former UK All-American Jamal Shteiwi in 2002-04.
Senior defender Brad Doliner, a native of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, returns for his fifth season on campus as a versatile veteran. UK’s junior class features a pair of newcomers in Wright State transfer Justin Laird and Cincinnati State transfer Jaytoe Teh. Laird, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., can play forward, with Teh able to perform on the backline and as an attacking player in Cedergren’s offense.
A year after having a diverse impact in their first season in 2012, UK’s sophomore class returns talented goalkeeper Callum Irving, midfielders Bryan Celis, Iask Krogstad and Kristoffer Tollefsen and forwards Caleb Richardson and Jacob Scearce. In addition, midfielder Jason Pitts, a product of Crestwood, Ky., redshirted the 2012 season.
Newcomers include defenders Alex Bumpus (Hilliard, Ohio), Charlie Reymann (Worthington, Ohio), Jordan Wilson (Auchterarder, Scotland), Kaelon Fox (Louisville, Ky.) and Cameron Mohseni (Littleton, Colo.). Midfield newcomers include Napo Matsoso (Louisville, Ky.), Paul Sime (Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe), Ryan Creel (Knoxville, Tenn.), Michael Vieth (Evansville, Ind.), Matt Quick (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Ben Perkins (Hong Kong, China).
The 2012 season saw Cedergren’s first edition set a new program record for wins over top-25 foes, with UK earning a hosting bid vs. Xavier in the NCAA Tournament, its first appearance since 2003.
Kentucky will open its 2013 season with a pair of exhibition games, including a 7 p.m. ET kickoff on Aug. 20 against Dayton at the UK Soccer Complex. UK will conclude its preseason with an exhibition at Northern Kentucky on Aug. 25, before opening the regular season vs. Wright State on Aug. 30 at the UK Soccer Complex.
