Wildcats Place Three On All-Mid-East Region Team

Men's soccer ties program record with postseason honors.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 10, 1999) -- The University of Kentucky men's soccer team tied a program record on Friday, placing three players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's All-Mid-East Region team.

For the second consecutive season, Wildcats Lee Baker, Giovanni Fernandes and Ilkka Jantti were selected to the 33-member squad. Baker, a senior from Spring, Texas, led the Cats in scoring this season with seven goals and eight assists. Fernandes, from Cricuma, Brazil, tallied two game-winning goals during his junior campaign, while Jantti, a sophomore defender from Lahti, Finland, helped anchor a UK defense which allowed less than one goal per match.

"We're happy that our players are being recognized on this level," UK Coach Ian Collins said. "Lee had an amazing career here at UK, and Ilkka and Gio just continue to improve."

Since 1993, UK has placed 15 players on the NSCAA Regional squad.
