Soccer Cats Announce 2001 Schedule
With its second-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament under its belt, the University of Kentucky men's soccer team is not shying away from competition as it starts the 2001 season at the Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase where the Cats will face national-power South Carolina and UAB in exhibition action.
The exhibitions, on Aug. 25-26, begin the Cats 11th varsity season in which they will meet five teams ranked in the final 2000 top-25 poll and six teams which competed in the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
The regular season gets under way on Aug. 31, as UK travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the IU Classic where it will match up against Butler and Indiana. The Hoosiers were ranked No. 4 in the final 2000 rankings and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.
If that were not enough, the Cats return to Lexington for their home opener a week later on Sept. 7, to take on Big Ten-power Ohio State, a team that finished last season ranked No. 18 and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
UK then welcomes UNC Asheville to the UK Soccer Complex before renewing its invitational tournament the next weekend on Sept. 14-16. The Cats will square off against the Citadel and Winthrop in the UK/Traditional Bank Classic.
The Cats open up Mid-American Conference play on Friday, Sept. 21, when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan. With only seven teams in the MAC, UKs six conference games will be spread out over the remainder of the season and will end the regular season Nov. 3, with a home date against league-power Akron, a game that could decide the conference champion and tournament seedings.
Down the stretch, UK will face non-conference foes Louisville, Cincinnati, IUPUI
and Georgetown College. The Cats last road trip takes them to Miami, Fla., for the
Florida International University Invitational where they will face FIU and Furman, another
top-25 and NCAA tournament team from 2000.
