ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A pair of second-half goals paced No. 20 New Mexico to a 2-0 win over the Kentucky men’s soccer team, lifting the Lobos to the 2013 Conference USA Championship, on a chilly Saturday night in front of 2,023 at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (6-9-3, 3-4-2 Conference USA) concluded its regular season with the 2-0 loss at New Mexico, with the Lobos emerging from a scoreless first half with goals in the 62nd minute and the 77th frame. The win lifts UNM to the league regular-season title, owning a 7-1-1 record in its first season in C-USA.
The Wildcats will return to action in the C-USA Tournament, hosted by Charlotte, from Nov. 13-17 at Transamerica Field. UK will face Old Dominion in the first round of the tournament, as ODU finished with a 6-3 record in league action, including a 2-1 overtime loss to Kentucky in Norfolk, Va.
New Mexico (11-4-2, 7-1-1 C-USA) got on the board in the 62nd minute, as Michael Calderon lofted a corner kick into the box, with Kyle Venter leaping to head it in at the far post.
In the 77th frame, UNM added to its lead, as James Rogers lofted a cross across the box to Ben McKendry at the corner of the six-yard box. McKendry finished his fourth goal of the year at the near post.
UK had its best chance to score in the first half, when Justin Laird fired a shot into the back of the net that was waved off for offsides.
GAME NOTES: Freshmen Ryan Creel and Kaelon Fox were UK’s first subs of the game … This was the first meeting between the two schools … Senior center back Steven Perinovic won 5-of-8 contested header attempts in the game and has now won 138-for-180 on the year.
