LEXINGTON, Ky. - Several current and former members of the University of Kentucky men's golf team played in US Open Sectional Qualifying on Monday with all six golfers falling short of receiving a qualifying spot into the 156-player final field.
UK freshman Cody Martin and former UK stars Ben Fuqua, Steve Flesch and J.B. Holmes played in the Columbus, Ohio sectional, while sophomore Seth Blann played in the Memphis, Tenn., sectional, and former team captain Andy Winings played in the Springfield, Ohio sectional.
Martin earned an impressive score in the first round of the qualifier, sitting in a tie for fifth place with a 5-under-par 67 on the first 18 holes. The native of Union, Ky., played The Lake Country Club in the first round and moved to Brookside Country Club in the second round, where he posted an 8-over-par 80 to end the qualifier at 3-over-par and tied for 81st.
Fuqua, Flesch and Holmes also played in the sectional qualifier in Columbus. Fuqua earned a 3-over-par 75 in the first round but improved his standing in the second round with a 4-under-par 68 to finish the event at 1-under-par and tied for 56th. Flesch played brilliant golf in the first round with a 6-under-par 66, but then posted a 4-over-par 76 in the second round. Flesch, a member of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame, ended the event at 2-over-par and tied for 48th. Holmes finished the event tied for 29th after a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and a 3-under-par 69 in the second round.
Blann, who was 1-under-par through 11 holes Monday, shot a 4-over-par 76 in the first round and then withdrew from the event in order to get back to Lexington in time for his tee time in the Kentucky State Amateur Championship on Tuesday.
Winings also played in sectional qualifying, competing in Springfield, Ohio, at Springfield Country Club. Winings shot an even-par 70 in the opening round and followed that performance with a 1-over-par 71 to finish the event at 1-over-par and tied for 13th.
Nine Wildcats to Play in Kentucky State Amateur Championship
A total of nine current or former members of the University of Kentucky men's golf team will play in the 100th annual Appalachian Wireless Kentucky State Amateur Championship, starting Tuesday at Kearney Hills Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.
The championship is scheduled to be a 54-hole stroke play competition, beginning Tuesday with the opening round and concluding Thursday with the final round. After the first 36 holes of competition, only the top 70 golfers will make the cut into the final round.
Kentucky will be well represented in the event with nine members of the 156-player field being current of future Wildcats. The list of current Wildcats that are scheduled to play in the event are senior Chase Carpenter, junior Mads Kristensen, sophomores Seth Blann and Joseph Barr, and freshmen Cody Martin and Matthew Anderson.
Blann finished second in the Kentucky State Amateur Championship last year, falling in a playoff to his older brother and former UK teammate Jordan Blann. Jordan Blann is the two-time defending champion at the event, but is not in the field this year after turning professional.
Will Bishop, Todd McDaniel and David Snyder, who will compete as freshman on the men's golf team this fall at UK, will also play in the event.
